Dandelion root, latin name Taraxacum Officinale contains terpene/sterol
compounds such as beta-amyrin, taraxasterol, and taraxerol, as well as free
sterols (sitosterin, stigmasterin, and phytosterin).(1) The principal
constituents responsible for dandelion’s effect on the digestive system and liver are the bitter principles. Previously
referred to as taraxacin, these constituents are sesquiterpene lactones of the
eudesmanolide and germacranolide type and are unique to dandelion.(2) The leaves
are a rich source of potassium, which is interesting since the leaves are used
for their diuretic action. This may make dandelion the only naturally
occurring potassium-sparing diuretic, although its diuretic action is likely
different from pharmaceuticals. At high doses, the leaves have been shown to
possess diuretic effects comparable to the prescription diuretic frusemide (Lasix).(3)
Since clinical data in humans is sparse, it is advisable to seek the guidance of
a physician trained in herbal medicine before using dandelion leaves for water
balance.
Uva Ursi is also referred to as bearberry, kinnickinick, whortleberry, bear’s
grape, mountain cranberry and mealberry. The leaves of this small shrub have
been used as an herbal folk medicine for centuries as a mild diuretic and
astringent. Uva Ursi contains a plant glycoside, Arbutin, which breaks down in
the body to form hydroquinone, a chemical compound that serves as an effective
astringent.(4) Uva Ursi contains other compounds, among them ursolic acid, which
are also known to regulate water balance.
Juniper, Latin name Juniperus communis, is a short evergreen shrub whose fruit
and oil provides a flavoring agent used extensively in the food, perfume and
soap industries. The volatile oils of Juniper Berries, particularly 4-terpineol,
may regulate water balance.(5)
Buchu, Latin name Agathosma betulina, is a small shrub native to South Africa
where it is used as a popular flavoring agent toimpart a peppermint-like flavor to brandies and wines. Employed as a diuretic
and antiseptic, the long leaves of this herb are brewed for use.(6) Buchu
contains ‘barosma champhor’ and other volatile oils, which account for its
mild diuretic and antiseptic activity.
In summary, Eclipse ShrinkWrap High Definition Water Extraction Formula may help
the body to regulate excess water. The regulation of water just beneath the skin
can dramatically effect the appearance of the muscles. Excess water just beneath
the skin tends to resemble fat and causes a smooth appearance. A hard razor
sharp physique occurs when body fat and water just beneath the skin is
regulated.
